Where Technology Meets Nature – Day Two with Our Kenyan Guests

The day began calmly, with our guests heading to the university cafeteria for breakfast on their own. At 9 a.m., they met with Dietmar and Max, and together they walked to the IoT lab, which served as the workplace for the day.

There, Max presented the subproject he and Tim had been working on – the construction of a prototype biogas plant. The system is to be equipped with sensors to measure parameters such as pH levels, temperature, and methane concentration. Following a valuable feedback session from agricultural science student Edgar and Professor Alice, the group moved straight into planning the sensor setup and compiling a shopping list for the required materials.

Around noon, Professor Nitze joined the team, and shortly after, Tim arrived as well. After a round of greetings, everyone went back to the cafeteria for lunch. In the afternoon, the group revisited their project plan, discussed it in detail, and refined several aspects.

Afterwards, Dietmar, Alice, and Jasper set off to explore the city center, while Tim and Max took the three Kenyan students on a search for materials. After two unsuccessful visits to local hardware stores, they finally found a suitable container and filling pipe in the third store – a small but satisfying success.

As time was running short and another appointment was scheduled for the evening, the rest of the errands were postponed. At 5 p.m., the group reunited in Dietmar’s garden, where coffee and delicious cake awaited. A series of engaging conversations followed in a relaxed atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the day was the chance to explore the Havel River by kayak. Thanks to a nearby club, the group was able to borrow a boat and paddle together along the river, enjoying a peaceful view of Brandenburg from the water.

Later in the evening, Professor André Nitze joined as well, and Dietmar fired up the grill. Dinner offered something for everyone and was a perfect way to round off the day. Full and pleasantly tired from the busy schedule, the group brought their guests back to their accommodation and said goodbye for the night – closing another eventful and memorable day.
